If It's Fall In Washington...

... then there's going to be some harvesting and healthy eating talk going on at the White House. Just as in the Spring, the White House garden is a famed attraction. First Lady Michelle Obama brought several young people to the White House to participate in the Fall harvesting of the White House garden. Students from Magnolia Elementary School (Maryland), North Elementary School(West Virginia), DC's Harriet Tubman Elementary and Bancroft schools also joined the occasion. The First Lady was joined by Sesame Street's Elmo and Rosita in the White House to round off the day of talking to young people about the importance of healthy eating. The Sesame Workshop and the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) joined the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) in a two-year agreement to help promote fresh fruit and vegetable consumption to kids, making those healthy choices a little easier for busy parents and families to make. The agreement allows PMA’s...

First Lady and Students Return To Harvest White House Garden; Eat Pizza

Tuesday morning cloudy, wet skies gave way to a beautiful afternoon in the White House garden where First Lady Michelle Obama and students from several schools gathered to reap the fruits of their labor.   First Lady Obama and students harvest vegetables from the White House garden. Photo/CD Brown. It was an awe inspiring moment to see that which had started as just little seeds months before in April, grow to be what will now feed White House guests, dignitaries, friends, and of course the First Family. Situated near the White House fountain and adjacent to the White House Children’s garden are full grown radishes, cabbage, carrots, spinach, kale, collard greens and leeks ready for the picking (and eating).   The first lady joined students from Arthur D. Healey School from Somerville, Massachusetts; and Milton Elementary Schoo l from Milton, Vermont – the later schools whose communities were ravished by Hurricane Sandy earlier this year. Mrs. Ob...
Students from around the country joined First Lady Michelle Obama yesterday to help plant vegetables in the White House garden. This year marks the fourth year that the first lady has invited students to partake in the planting, many who wrote about their own gardens at their schools. Added to this year's garden will be the plain, white potato.  The potato will join the sweet potato in this year's crop of healthy food items. The first lady maintains that any family can start their own garden.  White House chef, Sam Cass, who shared that spinach would be on the menu for dinner last evening, said to reporters, "This is doable by any family, be it in a window sill, back porch, backyard or community garden." "This doesn't take that much to have a huge impact on a kid.  A kid could see one seed sprout and taste one plant and have a real life changing experience." Nahmira Hishnnil, a seventh grader from Stetser Elementary School in Chester, ...

Updated: White House Fall Garden Tour

I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed today's White House Fall Garden Tour. Not only did the weather cooperate, (unlike the weather for last week's Korean State Visit), the grounds were meticulously manicured and flowers were freshly planted, seemingly for the occasion.  Fall hues of purple, orange, yellow and white permeated the Rose and Jacqueline Kennedy gardens of roses and chrysanthemums. First Lady Michelle Obama's vegetable garden was brimming with heart-healthy, good-for-you, vegetable products including red chili peppers, budding egg plant, onion, tomato and delightful garden herbs. Our tour guide, 'Will', was very accommodating, allowing us to take lots of pictures as he ushered us around the grounds where about 8-10 members of the media got an exclusive, first peek of the garden and the fall foliage.  Also along the way were several photographs of former U.S. presidents that were placed at various points along the route indi...
